Born January 31, 1840, Jefferson County, Ohio to Thomas and Mary Mills Pittenger.

Died April 24, 1904, Fallbrook, San Diego County, CA.

Buried Odd Fellows Cemetery, Fallbrook, April 25, 1904. Medal of Honor marker placed on grave July 7, 1988.

Married Wilhelmina (Winnie) Clyde Osborne of New Brighton, PA, May 17, 1864. Six children.

Enlisted Co. H 2nd Ohio Infantry Regiment, April 17, 1861, Camp Dennison, Ohio, three months. Enlisted as Corporal Co. G 2nd Ohio Infantry Regiment, September 15, 1861, Stubenville, Ohio. Mustered September 11, 1861, Camp Dennison, three years. Promoted Sergeant, March 13, 1862. Discharged with disability August 14, 1863, Anderson Station, TN.

Saw action in Andrews Raid.

Captured April 15, 1862, near Lafayette, GA; paroled via City Point, VA. Declared exchanged June 26, 1863.

Awarded Medal of Honor, March 25, 1863.

Pension $24 per month, No. 166,444.
