Twenty-three years, three months, eleven days of age on the day of the Raid. Born January 1, 1839 in Stark County, Ohio to Thomas B. Scott; mother unknown. Hanged June 18, 1862, at the southeast corner of Fair Street (now Memorial Drive) and South Park Avenue, Atlanta, GA. Buried temporarily at the site of execution. Remains removed to National Cemetery, Chattanooga, TN, April 25, 1866, near the Ohio Memorial, Section H, Grave No. 11,182. Medal of Honor marker at the grave. Married Rachel M. Davis, September 24, 1861, in Findlay, Ohio. (Rachel Davis Scott remarried William C. Waggoner.) Enrolled as Pvt. Co. F 21st Ohio Inf. Reg. on September 6, 1861, for three years. Mustered as sgt. Co. F 21st Ohio Inf. Reg., September 19, 1861. Volunteered for Andrews Raid on April 7, 1862. Saw action at the Battle of Ivy Mountain, KY, November 8-9, 1861; in Andrews Raid. Captured near Lookout Mountain, April 19, 1862. Court-martialed, Knoxville, TN, General Orders No. 54, 1862. HQ Department of East Tennessee, CSA. Awarded Medal of Honor August 4, 1866. Receipt acknowledged by father Thomas B. Scott by letter September 18, 1866. Pension $8 effective June 18, 1862 to widow Rachel Scott. |
